Genomic Advancements at NIOA Santa Gertrudis

Focused on producing superior cattle, bred for performance and commercial relevance, the NIOA Santa Gertrudis stud has become a progressive and industry relevant operation that is utilising genomics and reproductive technologies in the pursuit of maximising genetic improvements.

Established in 2014 by Robert and Eliza Nioa with the purchase of the historic Talgai Homestead near Allora, Qld, the stud program is rich in tradition and powered by innovation.

Over the past decade, the NIOA operation managed by Shannon Gardner has been built on elite Australian and American genetics that are backed by impressive pedigrees combining balance, structural soundness, and optimum carcase traits yet retaining ideal Santa Gertrudis breed character and phenotype.

NIOA has continued to invest in top-tier genetics while integrating advanced breeding technologies such as AI, ET, and IVF, to consistently produce Santa Gertrudis cattle that are true-to-type yet aligned with the needs of today’s beef industry.

“NIOA Santa Gertrudis remains focused on breeding high performance poll cattle that retain power, fertility and soundness for which the breed is renowned,” Shannon said.

“In recent years, we have taken our breeding program to the next level with an investment in meticulously chosen Australian and American genetics to ensure our herd has the perfect blend of performance and commercial relevance.”

Shannon said an aggressive expansion of the best available bloodlines, including the acquisition of many Australian-record top-priced bulls, combined with the purchase of neighbouring properties will enable further development of the stud herd.

A key part of this modern breeding approach is the use of genomic testing through Neogen Australasia, with NIOA utilising the Santa Gerdudis breed bundle which includes the Neogen TropBeef 50K – a specific DNA product that delivers highly informative markers in tropical cattle – and parent verification to track and drive genetic progress.

“We use the 50K bundle and parent verification. This covers the key superior traits that we monitor,” Shannon said.

The data derived from genomic testing supports critical selection decisions across the herd, helping them identify animals with superior fertility, growth, and carcase quality earlier in life.

“Genomics and DNA testing play a critical role in lifting the accuracy of our breeding decisions,” he said.

It gives us early insights into key traits like fertility, growth and carcase quality… long before we can see them physically.

“It’s become an essential tool for driving performance and consistency in our herd.”

The results speak for themselves. NIOA’s investment in outcross genetics and data-backed decisions has produced cattle that are gaining industry recognition both in the paddock and at auction — with standout achievements like the $50,000 sale of NIOA Lucy Q14 (P) and the $55,000 sale of NIOA Ronaldo R32 (P)(AI) in 2022.

“Trait selection combined with EBVs [estimated breeding values] give us a deeper insight into the genetic potential of our animals,” he said.

“This helps keep our long-term breeding program goals on track while allowing us to make confident decisions about which bulls and heifers to retain, join or sell.”

According to Shannon, the partnership with Neogen has made the integration of genomics both efficient and impactful.

“Harry and the team at Neogen are knowledgeable, supportive and easy to work with – they’ve been a great asset to our breeding program development,” he said.

“We’ve seen real value in incorporating genomic testing … it’s given us greater confidence in our selection decisions and accelerated genetic progress across the herd.”

Faster access to results – made possible by local processing — has also enhanced operational efficiency.

“Local processing means faster turnaround times which helps us make timely breeding and management decisions,” Shannon said.

“It also gives us confidence that the testing is aligned with our conditions and our production goals. Supporting Australian labs also strengthens our local industry and keeps the expertise and capability in Australia.”

By combining trusted bloodlines with the power of genomics, NIOA Santa Gertrudis is one of many operations demonstrating how data-driven breeding can enhance the strengths of any breeding program.

With tools like genomic testing now more accessible than ever, studs across the country are leveraging these technologies to make more informed decisions, accelerate progress, and ensure the long-term success of their herds.
