Guarani Poll Test
The Guarani Poll Test is a DNA test that detects the presence or absence of the Guarani poll mutation. This mutation is one of several independent dominant variants linked to the polled (hornless) trait in Brahman cattle.

A new layer of insight into poll genetics in Bos indicus cattle
The Guarani Poll Test identifies a recently discovered genetic variant linked to the polled trait in cattle. This mutation adds to the growing understanding of how hornlessness is inherited in Bos indicus cattle, including Brahman populations.
The test has been developed by researchers at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation within The University of Queensland. Now available exclusively through Neogen to support Brahman breeders in better interpreting poll genetics where traditional testing may not fully align with observed animal phenotype.
What is the Guarani Poll Mutation?
The Guarani poll mutation is a newly identified, independent dominant variant associated with the polled phenotype.
In some Bos indicus cattle, including Brahman, traditional Celtic and Friesian Horn/Poll test results may not always match what is observed in the animal. The Guarani mutation helps explain some of these differences by identifying an additional causal variant linked to hornlessness.
This discovery adds to the understanding of multiple independent genetic variants that influence the polled trait across cattle populations.
Why the Guarani test was developed
The development of the Guarani Poll test was sought to explain situations where the traditional Celtic Friesian Horn/Poll test results do not align with the visible phenotype in Bos Indicus cattle.
Researchers at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, part of The University of Queensland, identified a previously undetected causal variant of the polled gene in Australian cattle.
What the test provides
The Guarani Poll Test identifies whether the mutation is:
- Present
- Absent
At this stage, the test does not determine whether an animal carries one or two copies of the mutation.
Breeders are encouraged to contact Neogen or the QAAFI team if test results do not align with the on-farm phenotype. This supports ongoing refinement of the test.
When should you consider testing?
Testing may be useful where:
- Bos indicus or Bos indicus-influenced cattle are present in the herd
- Traditional poll test results do not align with observed horn or poll phenotype
- There is a need to better understand inheritance patterns within breeding lines
Results can assist with identifying potential carriers within breeding lines and support sire selection and mating decisions.
How to interpret your results
The Guarani poll mutation results will be reported as:
| Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Pg | Guarani poll mutation present |
| N | Guarani poll mutation absent |
| NR | No Result |
How do I order Guarani Poll Testing?
The Guarani Poll Test is available:
- As an add-on to the Brahman Bundle through the Australian Brahman Breeders Association
- As a standalone DNA test available through the Australian Brahman Breeders Association
This allows producers to choose testing options based on herd needs and budget.
For assistance in setting up a testing plan or to order Guarani poll testing, contact you local Neogen Beef Specialist or the ABBA office.
