Wagyu Genomic Testing Process
Genomic testing for registered Wagyu cattle should be ordered from the Australian Wagyu Association using the process below:
- Contact the relevant Neogen Australasia Territory Manager or the AWA Member Services team to identify the genomic testing that best fits the needs of your breeding program.
- Purchase your TSU applicator and TSUs from Neogen Australasia.
- Ensure that you are a current, financial member of the Australian Wagyu Association, and if applicable, a member of Wagyu BREEDPLAN.
- Collect DNA samples from your animals. For a simple, step-by-step guide, click here.
- TSUs are the most common form of DNA sample, however tail hairs or semen straws can also be submitted for testing.
- Orders can be submitted using the AWA’s online DNA system called Helical.
- Sign into the Helical database on the AWA website using your username and password, and click ‘New Test Request’ from the ‘Test Requests’ menu.
- Load the details of your order
- When ready, click ‘Submit Request’ to submit your order to the Australian Wagyu Association.
- Upon receipt of your ‘DNA Test Request’, the AWA will process and confirm your order, submit it to Neogen for processing, and email you an acknowledgement letter.
- Orders can also be submitted using an Excel based ‘DNA Test Request Form’, although this is not the preferred method. For details, contact staff at the Australian Wagyu Association.
- Print the acknowledgement letter (emailed from AWA) and mail a hard copy of the acknowledgement letter, along with your DNA samples to the Neogen Australasia, 14 Hume Drive, Bundamba, QLD 4304.
- When received at the Neogen lab, genotyping of your samples will be undertaken, and results (e.g. genomic profiles, genetic condition results) will be returned to the Australian Wagyu Association.
- Where applicable, analysis of the genomic profiles will be conducted by the AWA (e.g. parentage verification)
- Where applicable, genomic profiles will be automatically sent to ABRI for inclusion in Wagyu BREEDPLAN, and to AGBU for the completion of the Crossbred Wagyu Test.
- Results will be provided to you via email by the Australian Wagyu Association.
- Results can also be accessed by signing into the Helical database on the AWA website using your username and password.
- Parentage and genetic condition results are usually available within 3-4 weeks. Once parentage verification results have been received, any animals with qualifying parents will be eligible to submit for registration.
- Subject to the Wagyu BREEDPLAN genetic evaluation schedule, genomically enhanced EBVs are usually available within 6-8 weeks.
More specific information about the ordering process contact Neogen Australasia on 07 3736 2134, or naa-lab@neogen.com.
